Students will be secure in their understanding of mathematics, as demonstrated by an ability to explain, reason and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
Mathematics is a subject that opens the door to the world for students and its importance cannot be underestimated. A reliable understanding of all areas of the subject and the links between these areas are fundamental to the development of every mathematician. The curriculum in mathematics is built around knowledge.
Mathematical knowledge provides the foundation on which skills can be applied. Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to explore why methods work and how the steps of each method fit together. The use of detailed mathematical language is key for students to be able to understand and explain, in depth, the skills that make up maths. The delivery of the curriculum will acknowledge that the accumulation of new knowledge can only be successful if it is built on pre-existing knowledge. All students should be motivated through the successes that they work hard to achieve in maths.
