Oasis Academy Don Valley partners with TCHC to be part of ‘Bears of Sheffield’

Are you ready to go on a bear hunt? We have been ‘beary’ lucky and has been given the opportunity to build our very own bear sculpture which will be designed by students and staff.

We're all set to decorate and paint a bear in our art department which will then be part of the summer bear trail in the city for all to go and visit from Monday 13th July until Sunday 13th September.

160 bears are set to arrive on Sheffield’s streets, you really won’t be able to miss them! The Bears of Sheffield is ‘pawsome’ idea from The Children’s Hospital Charity to raise thousands of pounds to transform the Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Claire Michels, Head of Primary at Oasis Academy Don Valley said; “We are all ‘beary’ excited and cannot wait to try and raise our target of £1000 for this ‘pawsome’ charity through lots of exciting events.”

The Bears of Sheffield is a public art exhibition which will unite the city whilst celebrating everything that is wonderful about Sheffield and its surrounding areas. Coordinated by The Children's Hospital Charity, the trail will bring together businesses, communities, artists and schools whilst supporting Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The Bears of Sheffield will showcase 60 big and 100 little bear sculptures in both indoor and outdoor locations.

This year, they are hoping to top last time’s grand total of £610,000 raised for the children’s hospital.

Throughout next half term Oasis Academy Don Valley will host a range of fundraising activities and events, the first one being in the half term holiday a ‘Online Bear Quiz’. The next two events are a ‘Sponsored Spell’ in the Primary phase and a ‘Give it up or take it up’ challenge in the secondary phase.

Annabelle Kelshaw, Art Teacher at Oasis Academy Don Valley added; “Our bears of Sheffield sculpture will be designed around the history of the area in which our academy is situated. We will be including our academy’s values and nine habits within our planned design using colours that correlate with our school.”

“Our overall aim within our project is to consolidate the history of Darnall and to illustrate our care and respect for the community we serve. We will use art to tell a creative visual story.”

Once the exhibition is over, all the bears will be auctioned off in October to raise money towards transforming the Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
